A former South Carolina firefighter has been convicted on charges of falsely reporting an armed robbery.
The Greenville News reported former Taylors firefighter Michael Polston Jr. was convicted Thursday and was sentenced to 90 days in jail.
Circuit Judge W. Jeffrey Young also ordered Polston to pay $2,700 to the Greenville police department and Greenville County Sheriff's Office for the 124 hours they put into the investigation.
Police say Polston falsely reported he was threatened by a panhandler in March 2009.
Prosecutor Katryna Salisbury says investigators don't know what prompted Polston to file the report. Defense attorney Randy Chambers agreed, saying he's not sure his client knows, either.
