FAA says banner planes may fly along SC coast

The Federal Aviation Administration says there's nothing a town can do to ban small planes towing advertising banners along the South Carolina coast.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports Friday some island residents were upset when a banner plane passed over island beaches last weekend.
Town attorney Brian Hulbert says he tried to notify the plane's owner of a 1993 town ban on aerial advertising. Town manager Steve Riley says the ordinance is aimed at advertising considered "tacky and annoying."
Apparently the ban can't be enforced.
FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac says the agency, not the town, controls the nation's airspace. She says as long as planes are flying safely, they can go almost wherever they want.
