China assures continued support for development

Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang has reiterated his country’s commitment to the mega development drive in Sri Lanka.

On arrival at the President’s House this morning, the Chinese Vice Premier was welcomed by Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa. Thereafter, during a meeting with President Rajapaksa, discussions were held on bilateral matters. At a cordial and constructive talk, the Chinese Vice Premier said they will give assistance for many development projects due to the friendly ties existing between the two countries.

The National Performing Arts theatre coming up in the Nomads Grounds, the Norochcholai Thermal power plant, the Hambantota harbour, the Matara–Kataragama rail track and the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway are launched with Chinese assistance. Mr. Dejiang assured continued assistance for these projects. He thanked the President for the support Sri Lanka gave China to secure permanent membership in the UN Security Council. The President appreciated China’s support for development projects and the routing of terrorism. Mr. Dejiang assured continued support to the Sri Lankan Government in this respect.

During the visit of the Vice Premier, Sri Lanka and China entered into several agreements on economic and technical cooperation, highways development, enhanced cooperation in information technology and communication and harbour. The Chinese Vice Premier apprised the President of the agreements inked. A high level delegation of the Chinese government, Parliamentarians and Ministry Secretaries were present on this occasion.

The Chinese Vice Premier extended greetings to Yoshitha Rajapaksa on his 23rd birthday.
