Being a police officer isn't all about search warrants, drug busts and murders, especially not for a special unit within the Florence Police Department.
There are six school resource officers (SROs) in the agency and each is assigned to several schools in Florence School District 1, said Florence Police Sgt. Gerald Cameron, who supervises the school resource team.
Working around young children and teens is bound to be an exciting and special challenge, Cameron said.
"I've worked narcotics and patrol. Being a school resource office is not better, it's just different," he said.
You're not only a police officer when you're in the school system, Cameron said. Rather, you are a teacher, a counselor, a mentor and even a big brother or father figure.
