South Carolina officials say a woman has been charged with drunken driving after a three-car crash on Interstate 95 that injured eight people including an infant who was thrown from a car into a lake.
Santee Fire Chief Edward Barnett told The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg that the 8-month-old baby was thrown from an SUV on the bridge over Lake Marion during Saturday's crash.
South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Billy Elder said 33-year-old Tonya Sue Thornton of Barnwell has been charged with felony driving under the influence in connection with the crash.
In addition to the baby and Thornton, six other people were sent to hospitals from Charleston to Columbia and northbound traffic was blocked on the interstate for more than an hour.
