Heat advisory: Columbia forecast to hit 100

Jun 14, 2010 11:05:00 AM - thestate.com
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the most of the state from Columbia to the southeast, meaning the combination of heat and humidity today can make it dangerous for some people to spend too much time outdoors.

The high today in Columbia is forecast to hit 100, with the heat index reaching 105.

Columbia’s famously hot temperature rose to 100 for the first time this year on Sunday. Weather experts pin the blame on the Bermuda high, which has set up over the central Atlantic and is pumping warm, moist air our way.

While it might seem early for such high temperatures, this heat wave isn’t all that unusual. The average date of the first 100-degree day in Columbia since 1887 is June 30, according to the Southeast Regional Climate Center.

This is the earliest 100 since 1985, when it was June 6. The earliest 100 in Columbia history was May 22, 1941. On the other end of the heat spectrum, the temperature never reached 100 in 15 of the past 50 years in Columbia, according to the climate center records.
