In the green environs of a town stretched between mountains and Buddhist monuments, the Asia Cup will commence at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium here on Tuesday.
The tournament’s 10th edition featuring host Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, will be one of the stepping stones leading to the World Cup in the Indian sub-continent, early next year.
The captains though had a different take as Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara quipped: “We would like to stay in the present,” It was a line echoed by M.S. Dhoni while Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi differed and added: “Asia Cup is an important tournament and it is also preparation for the World Cup.”
