A steady increase has been marked in the tourist arrivals to the country during the past six months.
During the corresponding period last year 157 thousand tourists have arrived in the country. During the same period this year the number has increased up to 233 thousand as indicated by the National Development Centre. This shows an increase of 48 percent. The peaceful environment prevailing in the country has contributed to the increase in the tourist arrivals. Several programmes have also been launched for tourism promotion. Infrastructure is being improved. Sri Lanka has been listed amongst the 34 top tourist destinations in the world by the New York Times. The percentage of tourists from the Middle East has increased up to 101 percent. The government targets to receive 600 thousand tourists by the end of this year.
