Blake Says Treat Fonseka Fair

Jun 15, 2010 6:25:15 AM - thesundayleader.lk

Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Robert Blake

Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Robert Blake, in an interview with rediff.com, had reiterated the US’s interest in having Fonseka treated ‘fairly and in accordance with Sri Lankan law.’

Blake was quoted to have added, “We were pleased to hear that whatever decisions are made by the military courts, which are now considering the two different charges against General Fonseka, will be reviewed by higher Sri Lankan civilian courts that that will be done in a public manner, so that there will be an assurance of due process,”

In an interview on HARDtalk, with the BBC’s Stephen Sackur last week, Sri Lanka’s Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse had said that the retired General, who is currently under arrest, would be hanged – should he testify against the country – which would amount to treason.

Pressed for a comment on the Defense Secretary’s threat, Blake had reiterated the US’s interest in a fair trial for the retired General, adding however that they were not in a position to comment on the matter as they had not ‘access to the charges against General Fonseka’.
