A large group of members of the Public Employees Union and the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya of the Harbour has joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Employees Union.
R.M. Wijeratne General Secretary of the Public Employees Union of the harbour opined that at present a massive development was taking place in the country. The Government is also developing the economy. As activists of the Public Employees Union of the Harbour they have ditched their Union and decided to join hands with the Sri Lanka Freedom Employees Union.
Premaratne Gurusinghe, Secretary of the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya of the harbour pointed out that the harbour in recent history became the main establishment generating the income of the country. The Hambantota Harbour is in the development stage while work on the Kankesanthurai Harbour is progress. In addition work on the Galle and Oluvil harbours is also taking place. Development of these harbours was not suspended.
The members of these Unions said they took this initiative in the face of massive improvements taking place in the Ports sector and the major economic development witnessed throughout the country. A large group from the Public Employees Union representing the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya representing the United National Party, crossed over to the Sri Lanka Freedom Employees Union of the harbour.
