S.C. State University's Board of Trustees voted on Tuesday not to renew the contract of President George Cooper, bringing more uncertainty to a university that has been beset in recent years by in-fighting and leadership squabbles.
Cooper, whose contract expires on June 30, came to the university less than two years ago. He succeeded Andrew Hugine, whose contract was also not renewed, sparking anger from prominent alumni who believed he should have been retained.
The board voted 7-4 not to renew Cooper's contract.
John Smalls, the university’s senior vice president, was named interim president.
