Longtime Columbia residents expect summer to be stiflingly hot. If the blast comes a few weeks early like this year, they can adjust.
But imagine being dropped into this sauna straight from a cool day in Boston.
Andrew Gruber doesn’t have to imagine. He’s one of the hundreds of students from Northern reaches going through freshman orientation this week at the University of South Carolina.
“It’s ridiculous,” Gruber said Tuesday, the third straight day of 100-degree temperatures in Columbia. “To put it in Boston terms, it’s wicked hot.”
