All illegally reclaimed land in water reserve areas will be brought to its original position. Its aim is to control floods in Colombo.
Accordingly, the path for the smooth flow of water from the Second Lane in Nawala to a reserve area is being cleared. This work commenced today. These activities are being carried out under the programme of containing floods in Colombo. It is being mooted at the behest of Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa. The Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation is mediating in the work. The area which spans 100 acres has been identified as a water reserve. Many houses in the environs were flooded during the last rainy season due to the illegal reclamation of land.
