Plans are afoot to revive the Sugar factory in Kantale with the aim of increasing local sugar production.
The factory had been shut down for nearly 18 years due to terrorist threats. The Government has decided to solicit views of the Maha Sangha, the employees, people’s representatives and State institutions on the reopening of the factory. Attention was focused on the possibility of reopening the factory during a discussion chaired by Minister P. Dayaratne. The talks dealt on procuring new machinery and seeking a new investor for the reopening of the factory. Deputy Ministers Sarath Kumara Gunaratne and M.K.D.S. Gunawardena and Secretary to the Ministry of State Resources and Enterprise Development Willie Gamage were present at this meeting.
