Coconut cultivation in the North will be popularized to upgrade the Coconut based industry. Addressing a media conference in Colombo, Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said a programme to bring 150,000 acres under Coconut cultivation in the North was being planned.
The Minister said that priority was being given to help the resettled families to earn an income. As an initial measure, he pointed out that they intend to provide 27,000 families with at least three plants each. The Government has begun to make a dedication to ensure a better future for these civilians.
In the meantime, the Minister pointed out that measures have been taken to overcome the bacteria that is impacting coconut plantations in the Galle, Weligama, Matara and Hambantota areas. The effected trees are being destroyed. The Government aims to compensate the cultivators. Minister Samarasinghe opined that a special type of plant which can sustain diseases will be distributed among the cultivators. Deputy Minister Salinda Dissanayake was present at this media briefing.
