Minister Maithripala Sirisena has said that Local Government representatives who do not take initiatives to fight dengue will not receive nominations at a future election. He was speaking at a ceremony at the Chilaw Base Hospital.
Issuing this warning to party members, Minister Sirisena said they should not forget that in addition to his post as Health Minister, he was also the SLFP General Secretary. Local Government polls are to be held very soon and that the fight against dengue will take prominence for heads of Local Government institutions to be considered for them to gain nominations. Minister Sirisena reminded that most of the Local Government Chairmen are from the SLFP. The Health Minister added that Local Government institutions should be in the forefront while fighting dengue or other diseases, and raising public awareness on practicing cleanliness and good hygiene.
The Minister was speaking after opening a three-storied building at the hospital. It was put up at a cost of 225 million rupees provided by the Japanese Red Cross at the request of the Sri Lanka Red Cross.
