Japan has emphatically stated that international organizations should not dictate terms to Sri Lanka.
Visiting Japanese Envoy Yasushi Akashi said that Japan never imposed conditions on Sri Lanka when giving aid. Akashi was speaking to reporters in Colombo, following a meeting with External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris.
The Japanese Envoy pointed out that Japan was giving 39 billion Japanese Yen 39 billion Yen as development assistance to Sri Lankafor health, education, infrastructure and Human Resuorce Development. It was being provided with fullest consultation of the government.
On his 20th visit to the island, Akashi noted that Sri Lanka has made great strides towards peace and also praised the creation of a commission of lessons learned and reconsiliation by President Mahinda Rajapaksa
During his stay in Sri Lanka, Mr. Akashi will meet with government officials and representatives of the ruling and opposition parties. He is also scheduled to visit resettlement villages for IDPs and attend ceremonies associated with Japan’s assisted projects for IDPs in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka.
