Late-filing Columbia city council candidate Catherine Bruce was
disqualified this morning from running for city council in the
upcoming District 2 race.
"Our duty is clear,'" said Hamilton Osborne, one of the three
members of the Municipal Election Commission who voted unanimously to
Osborne said the law, absent certain compelling
circumstances that might have justified excusing Bruce's lateness,
left the commission no choice.
Bruce filed two minutes after the noon March 19 filing
deadline. She would have been the ninth candidate in the special
election to fill the District 2 seat vacated by longtime councilmember
E.W. Cromartie. The sprawling district runs from the center city to
the north part of the city.
Bruce said her delay was caused by wanting to take time to
reflect on a council bid, as well as talk to family.
