Greene will be Democrats’ U.S. Senate nominee

Jun 18, 2010 12:02:00 AM - thestate.com

S.C. Democrats rejected a protest of last week’s U.S. Senate primary vote tonight, meaning unknown Alvin Greene, who is facing a felony obscenity charge, is set to represent the party against Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint.

Greene’s opponent Vic Rawl, a Charleston former state lawmaker and judge and the party’s choice to challenge DeMint, told a committee of Democrats his upset loss to Greene is the fault of unreliable electronic voting machines that witnesses say malfunctioned.

The committee could have ordered a new vote, as Rawl requested, or awarded Rawl with the nomination.

Greene earned 60 percent of primary votes last week.
