Victory Day Parade with much grandeur

The National Victory Day celebrations were held today with much grandeur to commemorate the war heroes who unified the country amazing the world.

The Chief Guest of the national function President Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa were ushered to the venue in a motorcade. They were greeted by Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Two minutes’ silence was observed in memory of the war heroes after the National Flag was hoisted. Thereafter a 21 Gun Salute was accorded.

The President thereafter inspected the parade of the three Armed Forces, the Police and the Civil Defence Force. The war heroes who risked their lives in the bastions of the ruthless terrorists participated in the parade. A simultaneous air, sea and land show of the Security Forces was held thereafter. The heavy vehicles and armoured cars of the military were on show. The air show consisted of the fighter jets of the Air Force which made a decisive contribution to wipe out terrorism by making precision attacks. A number attack craft of the Navy were also exhibited. The members of the defence forces displayed before the foreign and local dignitaries that they possess the modern technology, fire power and skilled personnel to overcome enemies in protecting the motherland in the future as well.
