Columbia bars opening early for World Cup games

Jun 10, 2010 4:54:00 PM - thestate.com
It’s time for mornings with Messi, coffee with Kaka or breakfast with Bradley and the boys.

If you don’t understand the references, you probably won’t be one of the soccer fans carving out time to watch the FIFA World Cup games beginning Friday and running through the title game July 11 in South Africa. Because of the time difference, many of the matches are being shown live on ESPN early in the day in the U.S.

A few businesses in the Columbia area think avid fans want to watch the games in a pub-like atmosphere surrounded by fellow soccer aficionados, even if they have to get up early or skip work.

Delaney’s in Five Points and Sly Fox Pub in the Vista plan to open in time for the 7:30 a.m. games the first 10 days of the tournament. Publick House will open for those crack-of-dawn games if fans express special interest, and it’ll certainly be open in time for the 10 a.m. games daily.

Cock ’N’ Bull owner Rod Skinner had hoped his pub would be ready at its new home at 326 S. Edisto Ave. by the start of the World Cup, but construction delays made that impossible. Instead, Skinner has worked a deal with Dr. Rocco’s in Five Points to open for the 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. games for the Cock ‘N’ Bull regulars through the first two weeks of the tournament.
