Construction work on the Government Seed Farm commenced today under the patronage of Basil Rajapaksa. Government will spend 150 million rupees on this work. The Seed Farm will supply quality seeds to peasants who are taking to cultivation after the war. In addition the building of a Seed Research Laboratory in the Murunkan area is on the cards. It will receive Japanese assistance.
Japan’s Special Envoy Yasushi Akashi, who also participated in this event pledged continued Japanese assistance for the development work that is taking place in the North.
Hand tractors, tractors and agricultural implements were distributed among the farmer community in the area.
Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Parlaimentarian Chandrakumara Murugesum and Northern Governor G.A. Chandrasiri were among those present at this event.
