Yasushi Akashi lauds Northern development

Jun 19, 2010 11:51:34 AM - itnnews.lk

The Northern development programme is laudable. Japan will continue supporting Sri Lanka’s development. These views were expressed by Japan’s special envoy Yasushi Akashi to the President.

Mr. Akashi said the Sri Lankan government had succeeded in systematically maintaining the programme to resettle the displaced in their places of origin while undertaking development in the North. He told President Rajapaksa that there is a clear change in the situation in the North today as he had visited the region on several earlier occasions.

He was upbeat to witness the environment created for the Northern polity to live in a peaceful environment, in the face of the socio-economic and cultural development taking place. The Northern civilians, he said were severely impacted by terrorism. The programme mooted by the Government bringing together all communities on behalf of sustainable peace earned Akashi’s acclamation. The meeting between the President and Mr. Akashi took place at Temple Trees this morning. Minsiter Prof. G.L. Peiris, President;s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga, Foreign Secretary Romesh Jayasinghe and Japan’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Kunio Takahashi were present.
