60 Billion Rupees is allocated in this budget for economic development. The budget to be presented in Parliament on 29th of this month has an allocation of 60.83 Billion Rupees for economic development.
Deputy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said that the allocation is made for the Economic Development Ministry. 41.32 Billion Rupees is for capital expenditure. The allocation made for recurrent expenditure is 19.11 Billion Rupees. It is hoped to utilize these financial grants for the “Gama Neguma”, regional development, tourism industry, upcountry and southern development, “Uthuru Wasanthaya” and “Eastern Resurgence” as well as Jathika Saviya and investment promotion programmes.
Meanwhile the Minister revealed of a process of formulating a report on a pension for Samurdhi officers and the restructure of institutions coming under the Samurdhi Authority. He pointed out that a special Committee was appointed at the behest of the President and the guidance of Minister Basil Rajapaksa. Its aim is to make the Samrudhi Movement more efficient. Another aim was to solve the problems of those who are involved in the Samurdhi Authority and submit a report on proposals to encourage them. It is planned to effect structural changes to the Samurdhi Movement. He added that the Committee will also draw special attention to granting a pension to Samurdhi officers.
