President Rajapaksa has stressed that the Government has eliminated fear from the hearts of the people and now it is creating conditions for their satisfaction.
The President emphasized that terrorism and separatism was wiped out and the country was unified. He recalled that all citizens have a responsibility to preserve this victory. He said that a country will be developed only if its citizens are happy. The development of a country cannot be measured by its buildings. He noted that the Government which eliminated fear from people’s hearts is fulfilling the responsibility of satisfying their lives. The President made these observations at the 600th anniversary of the Sunethra Devi Maha Pirivena and the commemoration ceremony of Ven. Dr. Medagoda Sumanatissa thera. The Pirivena which was constructed by King Parakrama Bahu the Sixth has rendered much service in the field of Buddhist literature. The President also inaugurated a rock inscription which contained the details of books written by Buddhist monks who stayed in the Pirivena. The President presented a commemorative stamp and a first-day cover issued to mark the occasion, to the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter, Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha thera. The foundation stone for a three-storied building was laid by Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne. A website comprising details of the temple was also launched. Anu-nayake of the Amarapura Nikaya, Ven. Kotogoda Dhammawansa thera, Chief Incumbent of the Sunethra Devi Pirivena Ven. Medagoda Abhayatissa thera, Ministers, Parliamentarians and Foreign dignitaries participated in the occasion.
