Sri Lanka A concedes advantage – Day 3

Jun 20, 2010 9:55:15 PM - srilankacricket.lk

Play commenced at 9.10 a.m. under excellent weather conditions. It was a cloudless morning. The Australian pair of Bailey and O’Keefe resumed their innings and added on a further 41 runs bringing their partnership to 106 runs for the 7th wicket before O’ Keefe was brilliantly stumped by Kaushal Silva off Senanayake for 47. Hilfenhaus joined Bailey and handled the SriLanlkan attack of pace and spin which was tidy quite admirably. When the score was 270 Bailey was out once again a victim of Senanayake, caught behind for a well made 87. The captain was responsible for holding the batting together. Australian Cap Hilfenhaus more renowned for his bowling, once again showed responsibility and followed his first innings 42 with a another useful knock of 50, his maiden first class half century. He was cean bowled by Jeewan Mendis who quickly followed with the wicket of last man George. Australia were all out for 318. Damikka Prasad bowled with plenty of fire and had the opponents in strife on a number of occasions. Senanayake finished with figures of 3 for 110 in 25 overs, Jeewan Mendis took 2 for 29.

SriLanka were left with 424 to win.

With the pitch playing very true, the SriLankan openeers Paranavithana and Tirimanne got off to a very brisk start. With the score at 57 Tirimana needlessly drove a slower delivery off paceman George, straight to the hands of mid off O’Keefe. Chandimal then joined Paranavithana and the pair looked extremely comfortable against the pace attack, which was not making any headway. When spin was introduced Paranaviuthana punished the first over of the first innings wrecker for 18 runs. Over-amabition however got the batter of him, and with a big score staring him in the face, he slashed at a wayward delivery from George and was caught at slip by Forest, 3 short of his half century. Skipper Kaushal went in next, and he together with Chandimal played fluently, making the Australian attack rather innocuous, with runs flowing in all directions. Both batsman showed outstanding talent. When the partnership was 86, and looked very healthy Chandimal attempting to cut a short wide delivery was caught behind by Wade for 54 runs. Kaushal Silva soon followed caught at short mid wicket, off George searching for the third boundary in the over. Jeewan Mendis did not last long and from a rather dominant 177 for 2 SriLanka crashed to 186 for 5, Thirimanne, Paranavithana, Chandimal and Kaushal Silva had all fallen when they were well set for big scores, not showing enough responsibility.

Chamara Silva who failed in the first innings  with Kosala Kukasekera, despite some anxious moments, were there together when bad light stopped play. They had added 26 runs together. SriLanka are 224 for 5 and still need 200 runs. The overnight pair will have to shoulder all the responsibility to keep SriLanka in the hunt,The tall fast bowler George, extracting fair bounce had taken all five wickets that fell for 55 runs.
