A South Carolina treasurer is balking at being forced to pay for a $250,000 audit of her department that was ordered by investigators when a county employee was suspected of stealing money from public accounts.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported Sunday that Beaufort County treasurer Joy Logan thinks the county administrator and the other county officials broke the law when they authorized deductions from the treasurer's discretionary account to pay for the audit.
Logan said she is the only person who can authorize expenditures from that account.
The audit was ordered in March by county administrator Gary Kubic and the county's chief prosecutor Duffy Stone. A former worker in the treasurer's office was charged in May with stealing $210,000 from public accounts.
