President Mahinda Rajapaksa has stressed that developing a country is not a difficult task if the people are content. He expressed this view at a function held to commemorate the 600th Anniversary of the Sunethra Devi Pirivena.
He said the Sunethra Devi Pirivena has rendered a priceless service in propagating the dhamma during a certain era. It is said that the monks were ordered to write 1700 stanzas a month. Buddhist monks have amazing strength to stand up on behalf of the country and the nation. Development cannot be measured by the buildings in a country. He stressed that fear has been eliminated from the minds of the people. He added that the government was fulfilling the task of making them content.
The 5th commemorative ceremony of the Ven. Dr. Medagoda Sumanatissa threa was also held in parallel to this event. The President inaugurated the rock inscription that contains the details of books authored by Buddhist monks who took lodoging at the Pirivena.
A Commemorative stamp and a First Day Cover were handed over by the President to the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter the Most. Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkhita thera. Prime Minister D.M.Jayaratne and many Parliamentarians were present on the occasion.
