President Rajapaksa gave instructions to the relevant authorities to increase local milk production in order to protect the local consumers in the face of the soaring prices in the world market.
The President was speaking during a meeting with authorities of the livestock sector today. The President instructed them to take initiatives to increase milk production by 10 percent, emboldening the Dairy farmers. The local needs are met by importing 75 percent. Taking this situation into consideration, a special programme should be mooted to make the consumer aware of consuming local fresh milk.
The President also gave instructions to implement a programme to encourage dairy farmers without increasing the price of milk. Minister Arumugam Thondaman and officials of the Livestock Ministry were present at this discussion.
