Republican gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley earned $40,500 in consulting fees from engineering firm Wilbur Smith Associates in 2007 and 2008, according to tax returns the campaign allowed reporters to review.
Haley, who has represented part of Lexington County in the General Assembly since 2006, also earned $2,000 form the firm in 2009, which said it turned to Haley in during its pursuit of infrastructure work in Lexington County.
Haley faces off against U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett in a runoff for the GOP gubernatorial nomination tomorrow.
Haley has made legislative income disclosure a central part of her campaign, arguing if voters knew who was paying their lawmakers they would better understand their policy decisions. Haley has previously claimed she voluntarily disclosed her income, but the consulting fees did not appear on her state economic interest disclosure forms.
