Land mine clearance continues in Sri Lanka’s war affected areas. Sri Lanka Army troops recently reported clearing around 450 anti-personnel mines, according to the Ministry Of Defence. According to Major General Udaya Nanayakkara (Engineering Corps) over 1000 square kilometers have been cleared. According to the UNDP’s district mine action offices, around 482 square kilometers remain dangerous (as of May 1st).
Funds for demining, however, are running out soon, according to IRIN News. Another recent setback was the death of French deminer Dominique Morin while working in the eastern Mannar district.
