One year has passed since the establishment of the Air Force Base at Iranamadu. Many welfare activities on behalf of the people of the area marked the event.
It was the Iranamadu runway that was used by the LTTE terrorists to operate its light aircraft. Since the liberation of the area from the Tigers, action was initiated to set up the Air Force base. The first anniversary celebration was held at the Ramanathapuram Central College. The distribution of valuable school and sports gear worth about 200,000 rupees among the children took place in parallel to this event. These activities were organized under the patronage of Haley Rupasinghe, leader of the Commanding Officer Squadron of the Air Force base at Iranamadu. Wheel chairs were also distributed among the disabled.
A highlight was a cultural pageant of the children of the Ramanadapuram School. It was the Alma Mater of Charles Anthony, the eldest son of Velupillai Prabhakaran. About 3200 children were studying in this school at that time. With Charles Anthony joining the LTTE Air Force, the school was converted into a hospital of the terrorists. However, after terrorism was vanquished, the children were able to return to the school to pursue their studies. At present, about 480 children are studying in this school.
