The awards ceremony of the 2010 International Sambuddathwa Jayanthi Buddhist Film festival was held at the Presidential Secretariat today under the patronage of President Rajapaksa.
The official launching of the Wesak 2011 International Sambuddathwa Jayanthi Buddhist Film festival also took place under the President’s patronage. A slew of films based on Buddhist themes was presented for the festival. There were a number of productions from various countries. The President presented awards on behalf of Buddhist films submitted from countries including Malaysia, the United States, Germany, Belgium, India, Canada, Iran, Australia, Japan, Switzerland and France. Winners of Mobilephone films, Documentary films, Animation films and Short films received special awards and came in for acclamation from the panel of Judges.
The film festival is being organized by the Asia Aloka Foundation, the National Film Corporation and the Bandaranaike Memorial Foundation. Expressing views on the occasion, Chairman of the Film Festival, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa said he wished the necessary strength and courage for the country to become a centre which could transmit Buddhist films to the world. He called on the nation to make the 2011 Wesak Festival glitter the entire world.
