The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will be dissolved with effect from midnight today. This was revealed by Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga to the media today.
The Chief Minister said that according to powers vested in him, he had taken action to dissolve the Colombo Municipal Council with effect from midnight today. He told the media that the relevant Gazette notification had been sent to the Government Printer.
The power of the Colombo Municipal Council was held by the UNP until 1996. In 2006, all UNP nominations for the Local government elections in Colombo were rejected.
The independent group 03, which was affiliated to the UNP, won 23 seats while the UPFA candidates led by Wasudewa Nanayakkara won 14 seats. Mohammed Imitiaz was appointed Mayor. After a series of conflicts that followed, the Colombo Municipal Council functioned under a special commissioner.
