A bank robbery turned into a carjacking that turned into a five car collision on Rosewood Drive this afternoon that sent five people to the hospital, including the bank robber.
Columbia Police spokesman Brick Lewis said an unidentified man walked into the First Citizens bank on Rosewood Drive at approximately 1:30 this afternoon with a handgun before leaving on foot.
At the intersection of Maple Street and Rosewood Drive, the man assaulted a woman driving a green Mazda Protégé and stole her car. The man then drove down Rosewood Drive, where he was eventually spotted by police. Lewis said the police officers did not chase him, but nevertheless the man was involved in a five car wreck at the intersection of Rosewood Drive and S. Kilbourne Road.
The robbery suspect is in police custody in the hospital. Lewis said investigators still do not know the identity of the robbery suspect. No charges have been filed yet.
One of the vehicles involved in the wreck belongs to the state Department of Public Safety. Because of that, Lewis said, the Lexington County Sheriffs Department is investigating the traffic accident while the Columbia Police Department is investigating the bank robbery and carjacking.
