A bank robbery Tuesday afternoon turned into a carjacking that turned into a five-car collision on Rosewood Drive that sent five people to the hospital, including the bank robber.
Columbia Police spokesman Brick Lewis said an unidentified man walked into the First Citizens bank on Rosewood Drive at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday with a handgun before leaving on foot.
At Maple Street and Rosewood Drive, the man assaulted a woman and stole her car. The man then drove down Rosewood Drive and was spotted by police. Lewis said the officers did not chase him, but the man nevertheless was involved in a five-car wreck at Rosewood Drive and South Kilbourne Road.
The suspect was in police custody at a hospital. Lewis said Tuesday evening that investigators did not yet know his identity. No charges had been filed.
One of the vehicles involved in the wreck belongs to the state Department of Public Safety. Because of that, Lewis said, the Lexington County Sheriffs Department is investigating the traffic accident, while the Columbia Police Department is investigating the bank robbery and carjacking.
