A programme is being planned to repair boats and fishing gear grabbed by the LTTE and return to the fisher folk.
The LTTE had grabbed in this manner a large number of boats and fishing gear of the fishermen in the Mullaitivu coastal area. However with terrorism being routed, these boats and fishing gear were acquired by the Army. Deputy Minister Susantha Punchinilame has given instructions to the relevant officials to take immediate action to return to the fisher fraternity these boats and fishing gear. It is being implemented in parallel to the government’s desire of improving the economic conditions of the fishermen in the North and East. CEYNOR will repair the boats and engines. It is hoped to return to the owners once the fishing gear and trawlers are repaired.
