Transport Minister Kumara Welgama in a media briefing held at the national transport commission today stated that there would not be an immediate increase in bus fares. However he stated that there will be a 0.5% increase in the future.

The minister pointed out that the bus fare will be going up by a very small percentage due to the fact that the cost of fuel being stable and because lending interest rates of banks have gone down.

He went on to say that in the present situation there will not be an increase in bus fares till July next year adding that the service of the SLTB and the private bus service should be carried out without any hindrances.

Meanwhile the chairman of the association of private bus owners Mr. Gemunu Wijeratna stated that the aim of private bus operators is to provide the public with quality service and to minimize the shortcomings of the private bus service.
