Media personnel were afforded an opportunity today to observe the progress of the Colombo South Harbour development project. The Colombo Harbour expansion programme is being mooted to meet the demand that is increasing daily in this sector.
Chairman of the Ports Authority Dr. Priyath Banduwickrema said that with the construction of the new terminals, they now have the capability of handling 10 million more containers in addition to the present five million. It means a large number of vessels will come to Colombo. He said this is a development project which will attract investors.
The estimated cost of the harbour expansion project is 330 million US Dollars. Construction is being carried out in two stages.
The country will enjoy the benefit of a more land area along with this project. A notable feature is that the projects worksite being established at this site. Two breakwaters, one large and the other small, are being built under this programme. Large concrete posts as well as high technology and equipment is being utilized for this purpose.
Dr. Priyath Banduwickrema said when the President visited the location for inspection, it was discussed to reclaim about 450 acres. It is desired to launch a well planned town in the center of the sea. He described the entire project as a service to the Colombo City. It will also help ease congestion in Colombo and pave the way to develop the City, based on a well organized plan.
