Sri Lanka rejects EU conditions

Jun 24, 2010 11:34:08 AM - itnnews.lk

The Cabinet has expressed its strong opposition to the conditions laid down by the European Union for the granting of GSP Plus.

Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella told newsmen today that the European Union hjas submitted a slew of conditions that the Sri Lankan Government should fulfil if order to continue enjoying the GSP Plus. Accordingly Clauses of the Emergency which are now in force should be repealed. Repealing or amending sections of the Prevention of Terrorism Act and inviting special UN representatives of several fields including disappearances and torture to Sri Lanka are among other conditions laid down by the EU. A notable feature is the condition related to the enforcement of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution and appointing representatives to institutions including the Constitutional Council.

Minister Keheliya Rambukwella it is sad to note than a responsible organization of this nature was trying to dictate terms in the context of constitutional changes to a sovereign government. He emphasized that he does not think that any right thinking individual who is a member of a sovereign nation would agree to it.
