CAA Continues Crackdown

Jun 24, 2010 1:54:35 PM - thesundayleader.lk

The Consumer Affairs Authority of Sri Lanka is continuing its crackdown on errant traders, having raided several bakeries in Colombo and found them to be in non-compliance with the orders and directives issued by the authority.

Thirty such bakers operating in the areas of Colombo and Gampaha are now to face legal action, when it was found – during raids conducted today- that the weight of a loaf of bread being sold, was below the standard 450g.

In June, Cooperative Affairs and Internal Trade Minister had instructed the CAA to take action against traders that fail to publicly display the prices of their merchandise, with special investigation teams formed to conduct random raids.

The CAA had since conducted over 350 raids on traders and eateries, together with the support of the Department of Health (in surveying sanitary conditions)and has reportedly imposed fines amounting to Rs 7 billion on errant traders, this year alone.
