Spokesman for the United Nations Secretary General, Martin Nesirky says that as an advisory body, it will not be required of the three member panel to visit Sri Lanka, in order to fulfill its functions and duties.

When asked during noon briefings held at the UN Headquarters in New York yesterday if the panel of experts would be affected by Sri Lanka’s denial of visa’s to them, Nesirky had replied that it would not.

He had said however, that it would be up to the panel itself to decide on the course of action it would take, and if it would be necessary for them to visit Sri Lanka in order to do so.

Following the UN Secretary Generals announcement on of the three member panel, Sri Lanka’s External Affairs Minister G.L Pieris had expressed the governments sentiments at the panel being ‘counterproductive’ and had also said that the panel would not be allowed to visit Sri Lanka to conduct any form of investigation.
