It was on such a day that Arhat Maha Mahinda arrived in Sri Lanka with the message of Buddhism. The advent of Maha Mahinda to Sri Lanka during the reign of king Devanampiyatissa turned a new leaf in the socio economic structure of the country. The meaning of Buddhism was spread throughout the country with the establishment of the Buddha’s “Fourfold Assembly” consisting of Bhikkus, Bhikkunis, Upasakas and Upasikas, the monastics and laity. Hundreds of thousands of devotees have thronged Minintale in Anuradhapura to mark this blessed occasion. Religious observances are being held throughout the day. Our representatives say that devotees are participating in Sheela and meditation campaigns, as well as alms giving programmes. All necessary facilities have been arranged for them. Around 300 Danselas have been set up in and around the Anuradhapura sacred area. Meanwhile religious functions are being held at temples throughout the country today.
The 75th Daham Sisila programme was held at the Temple Trees today with the participation of President Rajapakse. The Dhamma sermon was delivered by Agga Maha Pandita Ven. Kotugoda Dhammavasa Anunayake Thera.
The ‘Savanak Ras’, the Poya Day programme of the ITN is being telecast from Situl Pahuva Raja maha Vihara. Thousands of devotees are participating in religious observances at the temple.
