The epic poem Sakunthala was Kalidasa’s masterpiece. The artistes of the ‘Aru Sri Art Theatre’ run by Arunthathy Sri Banganathan presented this drama to a full house at the Ramakrishna Mission Hall, Wellawatte on June 11. The hero, King Dhushyanthan was played by the guest artiste Vikas, a Kalakshethra student from Kerala. Sakunthala the heroin was played by Lakshmi Suramania Sharma.
What was unique was that the dance drama was not confined to the Bharatha Natyam style, but also integrated Kathakali, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchupudi and Kakari dance forms. That was something creative and the credit goes to Arunthathy and her band of artistes.
There was also a mergence of Carnatic and Hindustani music. The spellbound audience was left in a daze with the satisfaction of having witnessed Kalidasa’s masterpiece brought out in all its splendour and glory enhanced by the brilliant performance of the accompanying artistes. — Thilaka V.
