Jun 27, 2010 11:49:42 AM - itnnews.lk

Dengue is an unfortunate disease that may prove fatal despite one’s status, community or religion.

Death can occur in case, an intelligent decision is not made at the right time. Dengue preyed on Eight year old Melanie Harsha Angel Nicholas who was studying at Wolfendhal Balika Vidyalaya on last Wednesday. Although she had fallen sick on the 18th, medical treatment had not been provided due to a religious belief.

Dr. Sudath Peiris, Senior Epidemiologist commenting on the disease said that that any fever that lasts more than 3 days should be treated as dengue and seek medical treatment. The patients who suffer from the dengue hemorrhagic fever show symptoms of bleeding. He said that a reddish rash appears on the 3rd or 4th day. Another symptom is the lower abdominal pain, especially on the right side. The patients may also lose appetite and start vomiting. He said that proper medical treatment will prevent dengue deaths.

The little girl lost her life due to lack of medical treatment. If the public understands the seriousness of the disease and provide proper treatment, lives of hundreds of other children will be saved in the future.
