Carolina Day marks 1776 patriot win on SC coast

Jun 28, 2010 4:08:00 AM - thestate.com
Monday is Carolina Day in South Carolina, recalling the patriot victory in 1776 over a British fleet trying to attack Charleston.

The fleet was turned back by Col. William Moultrie and patriots manning a palmetto log fort on Sullivans Island. The palmetto tree appears to this day on the South Carolina state flag.

The commemoration in Charleston on Monday includes a church service at St. Michaels Church on the Four Corners of Law, a parade to Charleston's battery, a wreath-laying ceremony and a band concert.

At Fort Moultrie across the harbor there will be artillery and musket firing demonstrations as well as displays of 18th century medical equipment.

That event concludes with a concert by the band of the South Carolina Army National Reserve.
