A massive demonstration was staged against the panel appointed by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to inquire into Sri lankan affairs.
The Jathika Hela Urumaya organized this protest. The demonstrators began their protest march from near the All Ceylo9n Buddhist Congress in Colombo and traveled up to the UN Office.
JHU Leader the Ven. Omalpe Sobitha thera charged the UN chief had appointed the panel in violation of the principles and the rules of the world body. The prelate said Sri Lanka has its own mechanism to inquire into the human rights situation, and the UN should not interfere in the island’s internal affairs.
Western Provincial Minister Udaya Gammanpila said the UN chief had appointed the panel without the consent of the Security Council. He commended the Government for not allowing the panel members to enter the island.
He added that the protest against the UN panel will continue, together with an awareness programme to educate the people about its dangers.
