Many initiatives are planned for the promotion of the Indo– Lanka Naval sector. This was discussed during a meeting between President Rajapaksa and India’s Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Varma.
The meeting took place at Temple Trees this morning. Sri Lanka received the support of the Indian Navy for initial excavation activities for the modernization of the Kankesanthurai harbour. This was the topic which featured at length during their discussions. Another topic which came up for discussion was the promotion of training courses between the Naval forces of the two countries. A proposal was mooted to explore the possibility of launching a boat service between Talaimannar and Rameshwaram and the launching of a Naval service between the Colombo Harbour and the Tuticorin Port.
The Indian Navy Chief emphasized to the President that his recent tour of India enabled to fortify the friendly ties between India and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s Naval Chief Vice Admiral Thisaara Samarasinghe and several officials were present at this meeting.
