President tells Times of India “Will not betray the country for GSP concessions”

Jun 28, 2010 12:17:43 PM - itnnews.lk

President Rajapaksa has emphasized that Sri Lanka had the right to take independent decisions with regard to her future. Joining in an interview with “Times of India” newspaper, the President said there is no need for the country to betray all its things on behalf of the GSP Plus facility.

In the interview, he emphasized that the world should have a clear awareness on the situation in Sri Lanka. The United Nations and international groups had described Prabhakaran as the world’s deadliest terrorist. However, the President pointed out that he was amazed to note their stance after this terrorist was routed. He said he was also amazed as to the opinion such groups had on Prabhakaran and a different view on Bin Laden.

The European Union had made various threats on the granting of the GSP Plus facility. Responding to a query raised in relation to this issue, the President opined that if the European Union was averse to granting this facility, he had no need for it. He emphasised that his country possessed the necessary strength to move forward. A home-grown solution acceptable to all will be found to address issues in Sri Lanka. The Tamil community should be made aware of that they will not be undermined. He underscored that he is not prepared to provide Iron to the North and East when the South was receiving Gold.
