Congaree National Park changes canoe trip rules

The National Park Service has changed its policy on reservations for the free guided canoe tours at Congaree National Park based on feedback from the public.
Beginning with the fourth quarter of 2010, reservations will be taken on a quarterly basis. That means individuals can begin calling on July 1 for reservations for canoe tours offered Oct. 1-Dec. 31. Each person can make only one reservation per quarter for a maximum of two canoes.
For the rest of this quarter, reservations still will be taken two weeks before the trips, but the available seats fill up quickly under that system, leaving many callers frustrated. Under the new system, if one weekend is filled, a caller can ask for another weekend during that quarter. Reservations will be taken July 1 through Aug. 15.
The weekend canoe tours are an interesting way to see the parks cypress forest on Cedar Creek. For reservations and information, call (803) 776-4396.
